Cougar “Cattus Magnus”

After months of work, "Cattus Magnus" (aka Lionel) is ready to live with his new owners in Montana.  I hand twisted this life-size (67" x 29.75" x 16") mountain lion from 1000 feet of 14 gauge copper wire.

Porcus Aurelius, Airport Pig

After months of standing about in my studio, Porcus Aurelius, my life-size copper wire pig, has gone off to the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.  He will cheerfully greet customers at Matt's Big Breakfast.  He consumed oRuthAndPorcus2013-09-30ever 1000 feet of 16 gauge copper wire.

Wobbleworks, Inc., creators of the 3Doodler, asked me to use their 3D printing pen to make 50 small sculptures for some of their Kickstarter backers.  I just finished them ( 32 little arbors, and 18 tiny garden swings, using various color combos) and sent them off to Wobbleworks for distribution. Now what?

I won some lovely gemmy beads when I took a first place in the contest.  Now comes the difficult - but delightful - part:  using them!  I have made lots of non-gem jewelry, some of it pretty flashy, that I'm gradually uploading to this website, and continue to make birds and other creatures, so the new material is on the back burner.  Simmering. An angel I carved is on its way to the Kingdom of Bahrain in the Middle East.  My sister suggested I get a map and stick pins in it to show how far my pieces have gone, but that's too much work...I'll just make a list!  Let's see, in non-alphbetical order, work has gone to France, Japan, Australia, England, the Netherlands, Canada, China, and of course, the USA.  Still nothing to South America or Africa; the culture gap must be too wide. Back to the wire.

Another first…

for me:  a jewelry contest.   I’m entering the “Win $1000 Free Shopping, House of Gems Featured Artists Contest,” sponsored by House of Gems, an online gem store full of gorgeous goodies!  The contest rules are shown at the House of Gems Featured Jewelry Artists group -- http://www.flickr.com/groups/featuredartists/ -- under the contest discussion thread.  Wish me luck – I’d love to win some of those juicy gems! Coffee Man Joins the Etsy Collection!

Welcome to Sparkflight Studio!  Have fun exploring the wireworks, drawings, and music by clicking on the tabs (top left). I'm thrilled to report that my work was featured in a recent post on the Try Handmade blog:  http://tryhandmade.com/ruth-jensen-wire-sculpture/ . Coffee Man, one of my lifesize wire sculptures, has been purchased by The Etsy Collection!!!  This is an incredible honor, since they have the whole world of Etsy from which to choose.  I'm totally delighted that Coffee Man has relocated to Brooklyn and is part of the scene for staff and visitors at Etsy admin headquarters.  I hope to visit him there  -  maybe this summer.  Below is a photo of me giving Coffee Man the news...as you can see, he took it quite calmly, but I could tell he was pleased. 25 Birds

The Christopher Young Studio commissioned me to make 25 wire birds for Harry Winston's ("Jeweler to the Stars") holiday windows.  Now the lucky birds are donning fabulous jewelry on three continents!  Here's a video of  one in Chicago (video and photos courtesy of Christopher Young Studio):  Wire Bird Holds Diamond Bracelet
